“Your sister Rose is dead”… Remember that old punch line to a very old singing telegram joke… It seems that singing telegrams started when someone requested the Western Union delivery man on a bicycle to sing the message instead of just reading it, and that was in the 1930’s.
In the 1970’s the singing telegram again blossomed, but this time it was with complete parodies for every occasion. Maybe still a man in a messenger suit, but now it was an act. In 1978 American Singing Telegrams was conceived, but this time the singing telegram industry gave birth to the gorilla. It all started with Twinkle Toes the dancing gorilla who would strut arm in arm with her master the singing messenger. Together the messenger would sing and dance and so would the gorilla, and then the gorilla would dance with her victim while everyone would sing “Happy Birthday.” Today, the gorilla sings and dances alone and so does the American messenger. Both have become over the years independent performers.
But wait, what’s this? It’s a Belly Dancer, a Stripper, a Magician, a Clown, a Female Impersonator, a Stilt Walker, an Opera Star, a Cowboy, a Super Hero, a Fire Eater, a Hula Dancer, and hundreds of other costumed characters. They all joined the Las Vegas Singing Telegram business and were booked continuously . Then the industry took another turn, Star Impersonators, and who led the way? Elvis and Marilyn!
Here they come in their beautiful costumes singing “Viva Las Vegas” and “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” They led the way in the 90’s for the rest of the impersonators to follow, Mae West, Tom Jones, Ricky Martin, Cher, and right up to Lady Gaga. It’s endless, it’s
creative, it’s fun, it’s memorable, and of course it’s priceless.
